Christmas dinner

Christmas dinner

Our Christmas dinner consists of soup made of cabbage or mushroom and carp with a potato salad. Christmas dinner has many variations. Some families set one extra plate on the table for all the loved ones who are not among us anymore. Some put coins under the plates on the table, to have prosperity next year. Other families cut and share an apple, so they can meet in like this again. Some families pray, some don't. Also, you are not supposed to eat the whole day, so you can enjoy the Christmas dinner and see a golden pig.

Oblátky with honey

In Slovakia after the rising of the first star, the family sits down at the Christmas table, and at the beginning, the family munch ''oblátky'' with honey. The ''oblátky'' symbolize the host, the sacred bread and the body of Christ. They can be decorated with church symbols. They are round and oval.

Soup

While fish and salad are on the holiday table in most families, there are plenty of traditional Christmas soups. In one household during the Christmas holidays, we can see ''kapustnica'', sausage soup, carp fish soup, lentil or pea soup, elsewhere even mushroom soup.

The most common one is ''kapustnica''

Kapustnica

It is prepared from fermented cabbage meat and dried mushrooms. There are significant differences in regional cabbage recipes. In each region, valley and village, Christmas cabbage is cooked a little differently.

Main Food

Carp is a traditional fish we eat at Christmas. You can buy a live carp in a lot of supermarkets and on open door markets. You bring this poor thing home and keep it in your bath until dinner time. On Christmas Eve you cook it and serve it with mayonnaise potato salad to your family at the Christmas table.

Desserts and fruits

We love chocolate balls, homemade meringues and our favourite sweet pastry named ''vianočka''. It's very popular to half-cut an apple, which will reveal one of the two symbols: a star or a crucifix. If it reveals a star, it'll mean luck and health for the family. If we find a crucifix, it will mean illness or death for the family. And there's much more what people do with fruits.
