Christmas tree
Origin of the modern Christmas tree
We can trace the origin of the Christmas tree to Germany, from where it came to Slovakia at the end of the 18th century. The present giving tradition began at the beginning of the 20th century. People used to decorate their Christmas trees with red apples and walnuts wrapped in shiny paper.
Types of Christmas trees
A Christmas tree is an evergreen tree, usually fir, spruce, or pine. You can choose a fresh-cut, potted or artificial one. Christmas trees are used both indoor and outdoor. In Slovakia, outdoor Christmas trees are usually on the town squares or in front of churches. Whereas, an indoor Christmas tree is mostly placed in the living room, where many families put presents under the tree after Christmas dinner.
Decorations
There are many ways to decorate your Christmas tree. In Slovakia, we decorate our Christmas trees with different types of ornaments, Christmas lights, and chains. People mostly use blown-glass, wooden or ceramic ornaments. The most used shapes for these ornaments are stars, angels, bells, bows, candy canes, or regular Christmas decorations.
